Im having a problem authorizing with this gadget in windows 7. It worked perfectly with vista. When I click the authorize button, the gadget complains of hash.exe not being a valid win32 app. I uninstalled, reinstalled, and restarted; none of which fix the problem. Below is a screen shot and a copy of the log.

Could you please create the md5 checksum of hash.exe to see whether it is damaged somehow? You can do it for example with total commander file menu / create crc checksums, or any md5 hasher app.

The md5 sum is fine Shocked

What happens if you try in command line:

hash.exe > res.txt 2> reserr.txt

What are the contents of the txts?

Nothing.

res.txt has a hex string
reserr.txt is blank

running hash.exe > res.txt > reserr.txt
puts the text in res.txt exactly in reserr.txt
without the 2

Strange. What is the content of res.txt? (shouldnt be a hex stuff now)

Is it a 64bit or 32bit windows7?

Can you try with your virus scanner switched off?

Yes, FYI: "> res.txt" means that the standard output of hash.exe goes to res.txt, "2> reserr.txt" means that the standard error of hash.exe goes to reserr.txt.

When res.txt and reserr.txt are removed and "hash.exe > res.txt 2> reserr.txt" is run
a hash is formed in res.txt and nothing in reserr.txt

That also sounds fine.

Could you try whether a logoff/logon or a restart helps? (I have found some strange info on the net)

Nah I have searched the net for a few hours but...

If I understand correctly, you got the error also when you ran hash.exe from command line, is that right?

This is really strange as from res.txt it seems that hash.exe does its job but somehow you get a not valid win32 app error which I have only seen in my life when the actual program couldn't started at all for some reason.

Anyway, questions:
- What about other .exe-s? For example ping.exe in command line?
- Please run hash.exe in command line so that you get the error and then check the Event viewer whether it shows something interesting
- You could check http://en.kioskea.net/faq/sujet-1591-exe-is-not-a-valid-win32-application

And one more thing: could you please check hash.exe with dependency walker? You can follow this: http://www-archive.mozilla.org/quality/help/dependency-walker.html (you can find there a link for downloading dependency viewer also). Please profile, then send the result.

Thanks

hash.exe does not give me an error when I run it. When I ran it with the standard error output command you gave me, res.txt gets a hash and nothing is written to reserr.txt.

I ran the tracer program and there was a problem with IEshims.dll. This is linked to Internet explorer. Windows 7 have a prerelease of ie8. I am now going to try uninstalling it and reinstalling it. IF I still have a problem Ill uninstall and try IE7.

Ill let you know my findings.

Oops, then what did you mean "and the same error occurs in the program after I ran the command."

Hmm. I test the gadget on a Win7 RC1 with the default 8.0.7100 IE in a VirtualBox. There, hash.exe has nothing to do with ieshims.dll Shocked

Anyway, I wonder what your results will be

When I run "hash.exe > res.txt 2> reserr.txt" from the command line, res.txt is created with a hash in it and reserr.txt is a blank file. I only get the hash.exe is not a win32 app when I try to authenticate in the Iforgotthemilk gadget.

When I use the dependency tracer, it gives me a red error in the console log that ieshims.dll is missing or not registered or something. I tried to regsvr32.exe it and it says the dll had a problem? I am reinstalling IE8 now. The gadget gave me the same error when IE8 was uninstalled.

Well I just rebooted after installing IE8 again. Same error.

Do you want a copy of the dependency log? What next?

Windows 7 Ultimate 32Bit

IE 8.0.7600.16385

I opened hash.exe in the dependency walker then pressed F7, checked all of the boxes, and then started profiling.

Ill email you the log in a few minutes.

ok I sent you a couple of dependency watches.....let me know what you think.

another thing I noticed which might help debug the issue. When I change any of the settings, IE width, show background, color, the setting is saved but does not change on the gadget......

So basically the gadget doesnt get wider, change color, or remove the background, but when I go back into options the settings that I changed remain.

Also your Google Calendar gadget works perfectly and I can change settings successfully on that.
